WEDNESDAY in the middle of the week

Today is Sovereignty Day in Serbia. Sovereignty Day of Serbia (Dan državnosti Srbije) is celebrated on February 15th. It is a two-day holiday and is the National Day of Serbia. It marks the anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising (against Turkish rule) in 1804 and the first Serbian Constitution in 1835. It wasn’t until 1867 that the last Turkish troops left Serbia.

TUESDAY is Valentine’s Day!

Today is Rafik Hariri Memorial Day in Lebanon. The day remembers the former Prime Minister of Lebanon who was killed on this day in 2005. Rafik Hariri was a Lebanese businessman who had become wealthy in the 1970s. His started to use his wealth for philanthropic projects in Lebanon, including the building of educational facilities. In 1992, Hariri became the first post-civil war prime minister of Lebanon. He is credited with initiating an ambitious reconstruction program in Lebanon following the devastation of the civil war. On 14 February 2005, Hariri was killed by a massive car bomb in the capital, Beirut, along with 22 other people.

Today is the birthday, in 1942, of Peter Tork, American musician with The Monkees who were brought together for an American TV series in 1966. They had the 1967 UK & US No.1 single ‘I’m A Believer’ plus other hits including ‘Last Train to Clarksville’, ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday’, and ‘Daydream Believer’. Tork was diagnosed with a rare form of tongue cancer in 2009. He died on February 21, 2019 age 77.

Today is St. Maroun’s Day in Lebanon, the founder of the Maronite Church. Maroun was a priest who later became a hermit, retiring to the Taurus Mountains in the region of Cyrrhus, near Antioch.

Her 1970 US No.1 album ‘Tapestry’ has sold over 15 million copies and became a Grammy award winner in 71.
