Today is Showa Day (Shōwa no Hi‘), a public holiday in Japan. Showa Day honors the birthday of Emperor Hirohito, the reigning Emperor before, during, and after World War II (from 1926 – 1989). After the death of Emperor Hirohito in January 1989, April 29th was subsequently no longer celebrated as The Emperor’s Birthday but instead as Greenery Day, part of Japan’s Golden Week.

Today is Saint Pierre Chanel Day, a public holiday in the territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands. Chanel was a French missionary who arrived in Futuna in 1837. Through his efforts many of the people of the islands were converted to Christianity including the King of Futuna’s son. The King sent his son-in-law to deal with the problem who killed Chanel on April 28th 1841.
