and it’s MONDAY again

Today’s holiday is Unity Day in Vanuatu. Vanuatu is an island nation of 83 small volcanic islands in the South Pacific Ocean, with a population of about 270,000. Despite these relatively small numbers, the people speak an impressive 113 indigenous languages – it is the country with the highest density of languages per capita in the world. High chiefs from the different islands attend the festivities, which include performances by native dancers in their traditional dress and a parade. The holiday’s festivities typically include picnics, music concerts and sporting events.

Happy Monday, everyone!

She was born in Brownsville Tennessee, sang in her church choir and rose to fame in the sixties as a part of the duo – Ike and Tina Turner. She split from Ike Turner in 1976 and went on to a phenomenally successful single career. She gave up her US citizenship in 2013 to become a Swiss citizen. She lives primarily in Kusnacht, Switzerland but also owns property in Cologne, London, Los Angeles and a villa on the French Riviera named Anna Fleur. Smells like WEDNESDAY

Today’s holiday, celebrated in parts of India, is Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Martyrdom Day. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth of the ten gurus who founded the Sikh religion. He was beheaded in 1675 by the Mughal emperor. The execution hardened the resolve of Sikhs against Muslim rule and the persecution and helped to make the protection of human rights central to the Sikh identity.
