Month: March 2023

finally FRIDAY

Today is Truth and Justice Memorial Day in Argentina. It commemorates those who ‘disappeared’ under the military junta that came to power in 1976. This Argentinian public holiday is held on March 24th, the anniversary of the coup d’état of 1976 that overthrew President Isabel Peron and brought the National Reorganization Process to power. The coup installed the bloodiest dictatorship in the history of the country, led by General Jorge Rafael Videla, Admiral Emilio Eduardo Massera and Brigadier-General Orlando Ramón Agosti. At least 10,000 and as many as 30,000 were hunted down, tortured and ‘disappeared’ by security forces and right-wing death squads.

It’s THURSDAY!

Today is the first day of Ramadan. Ramadan is a period of fasting and spiritual growth and is one of the five “pillars of Islam” – the others being the declaration of faith, daily prayer, alms-giving and the pilgrimage to Mecca. Able-bodied Muslims are expected to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual relations from dawn to sunset each day of the month.

On this day in 1985, John Fogarty went to number one on the album chart with Centerfield. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq3hEMUeBGQ

Today people in many countries celebrate or continue celebrating Nowruz (Novruz, Navruz, Nooruz, Nevruz, Nauryz) meaning New Day. It marks the beginning of spring according to the Solar Hijri calendar.

BADA BING!

Those who want us to work to age 70 and the ones who won’t hire us after age 50 are the same people.

I love DST, it makes whiny people mad and that brings me joy.

When my wife was pregnant I asked the midwife how many babies she had to deliver to become a fullwife.

Watching the chickens move about the yard is very relaxing. Like poultry in motion.

My wife said, “Is it me, or is the dog getting fat”? Apparently, “It’s not the dog”, was the wrong answer.

I don’t know which is longer, a microwave minute or a treadmill minute.

That awkward moment when you’re ‘protecting’ children from drag, but not from being killed in school.

The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage.

If it weren’t for the invention of Venetian blinds, it would be curtains for us all.

Of the multitude of foods that taste like chicken, I find it ironic that eggs don’t.

I was watching the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra when the guy on the triangle disappeared.

Doctor: No, you’re not retaining water. You seem to be retaining food.

On this day in 1965, The Temptations released their second studio album Sing Smokey. As its name implies, it is composed entirely of songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson, and several other members of the Miracles as well. More importantly, it featured one of the well known Motown releases in its history ‘My Girl’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_CSjcm-z1w

TUESDAY – welcome Spring!

Today is Independence Day in Namibia, a public holiday. The holiday celebrates Namibia’s independence from South Africa on March 21st 1990.

Today is the birthday, in 1685, of Johann Sebastian Bach. There are so many pieces to choose from but this one is kind of spring-like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdsyNwUoON0

MONDAY – the First Day of Spring!

Today is Saint Joseph’s Day, a public holiday in Colombia. Saint Joseph’s Day is the feast day for Joseph, the husband of Mary and the adoptive and earthly father of Jesus according to Christian belief. In Colombia, Saint Joseph’s Day is also referred to as “Dia del Hombre”, meaning “Day of Men”. It is seen as a celebration not only of Joseph and of the role of good fathers, but also of the role of men in general in society.

KOLLEDGE

Today is the Spring Equinox in the northern hemisphere. In pagan circles it is a day to honor the Goddess of Spring known as Ostara or Eostre (from whose name the word “Easter” comes).

Saturday was the birthday, in 1844, of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Russian romantic composer. Here is the amazing Yuja Wang playing ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ a musical interlude from his opera – the Tale of Tsar Saltan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8alxBofd_eQ
