It’s THURSDAY for you and me!

Today is New Year’s Eve in Sri Lanka. Called Aluth Avurudda in Sinhala and Puthandu in Tamil, New Year’s Day is a statutory holiday in Sri Lanka. Tamil New Year’s Day is celebrated on the first day of Chithirai – the first month in the Tamil Calendar and is also known as Varusha Pirappu. This is also Sinhalese New Year. Like Tamil New Year, it marks the end of the harvest and the arrival of spring as indicated by the sun moving from Meena Rashiya ( Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (Aries). To mark the new year, everyone in the country celebrates by wearing light golden clothes and turning towards the east. It is a tradition that the first financial transaction of the year is when elders give gifts of money to the unmarried young, as a sign of good luck.

Today is the birthday, in 1954 of merican musician Jimmy Destri, keyboardist with Blondie They scored five UK No.1 singles including the 1979 UK & US No.1 single ‘Heart Of Glass’ and the 1978 world-wide No.1 album Parallel Lines. WEDNESDAY rears its ugly head

Today is National Children’s Day in Bolivia, Dia del Nino. On April 12, 1952 the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) drafted a joint Universal Declaration on the Rights of Children, a document that establishes which rights children have and how those rights must be protected. It asked each country to declare a Children’s Day (Dia del Nino) to help create awareness among the population regarding the problems children face and what can be done. Bolivia selected April 12th, the same day on which the Declaration was drafted, and Dia del Nino has been celebrated here since 1955.

Today is the birthday, in 1944 of German-Canadian rock singer, songwriter, and guitaris John Kay, from Steppenwolf who had the 1969 US No.2 hit single ‘Born To Be Wild’. TUESDAY after Easter

Today is National Health Day in Kiribati, a public holiday, A day to encourage citizens to have an active and healthy lifestyle.

For many countries, the health of its citizens is a top priority. A healthy lifestyle leads to people being happier and more productive. It is also a benefit to the country if it has to spend less on welfare because people are generally fitter.

Given the importance, it is surprising that not many countries have a public holiday to highlight health and activity. Apart from Kiribati, only Japan and Qatar do.

FRIDAY…finally

Today is Women’s Day in Mozambique. Also known as the National Day of Women, this day marks the anniversary of Josina Muthemba Machel’s death on April 7th 1971. Josina was a key figure in the struggle for the emancipation of African women.

When she was 19, Josina joined the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO). Josina received military training and rose through the ranks of FRELIMO to become the head of the party’s Department of Social Affairs in 1969, while still only 24. Josina was a strong advocate of the participation of women in the liberation struggle, and she was an icon for the Women’s Movement of Mozambique.

In 1969, she married Samora Machel, who would go on to become the first President of Mozambique in 1975. She died on April 7th 1971, at the age of 25 from liver cancer

Today is Chakri Memorial Day, a public holiday, in Thailand. Officially known as ‘King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day’, Chakri Day commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty by Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke ( Rama I) in 1782.
