Today is National Heroes Day in the Philippines. It is a day to honour the bravery of all Filipino heroes who struggled for the nation’s freedom, including those who vanished into anonymity. The date chosen is intended to mark the ‘Cry of Pugad Lawin’ in August 1896, which was the first act of insurrection against the Spanish colonisers by the Katipunan, a hitherto secret Filipino revolutionary movement.

Today is the birthday, in 1924, of Dinah Washington. She had this hit in 1959 and a couple more in the early sixties. She died in 1963 of a fatal drug interaction.

MONDAY still comes…

Saturday was Revolution Day, a public holiday in Morocco. Also known as the King and People’s Revolution Day, this day commemorates the exile by the French of Sultan Mohammed V on this day in 1953. This was the beginning of the Moroccan battle for independence.

Today is Day of the Tribes, a public holiday in Nauru. It is celebrated on August 19 to honor the country’s twelve traditional tribes and matrilineal system. With a population of about 10,500 people, Nauru is the world’s second smallest sovereign state by population, after Vatican.

It’s WEDNESDAY!

Today is Independence Day in Indonesia, a public holiday. Indonesia had been a Dutch colony for over 300 years when a group of revolutionaries declared independence on 17 August 1945. It took Indonesians four years of diplomacy and armed struggle before their independence was formally granted by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.

and just like that it’s MONDAY again

Today is Liberation Day – a public holiday in both South and North Korea. It marks the liberation of Korea from 35 years of Japanese imperial rule in 1945 after the end of the Second World War. It is also known as Gwangbokjeol, which literally means ‘Restoration of Light’ day.

On this day in 1976, ABBA released Dancing Queen as the lead single from their fourth studio album. Dancing Queen’ (which had the working title of ‘Boogaloo’) went on to top the charts in more than a dozen countries including the United States where it became ABBA’s only No.1.
