Happy MONDAY, girls and boys

Today is Sir Seretse Khama Day – a public holiday in Botwsana. This holiday commemorates the first President of Botswana on the anniversary of his birth on this day in 1921.

eretse Khama was born on July 1st 1921 at Serowe, the Protectorate of Bechuanaland (now Botswana).  Seretse Khama was the grandson and heir of King Khama III, who died in 1923. The Bangwato family of which Seretse Khama was the heir were hereditary rulers of the Protectorate. In 1925 Seretse Khama was made King, his uncle acting as regent.

Khama was training as a barrister in London after the Second World War, where he met and married Ruth Williams, a white English commoner. The story of Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams was depicted in the 2016 film, ‘A United Kingdom’. His marriage caused great difficulties for him at home and he was exiled in 1951.

The apartheid government of South Africa put pressure on Britain to remove Khama’s chieftainship. A judicial inquiry declared him to be perfectly fit for the job, but this was hushed up to appease the South Africans.

Kahama returned to Bechuanaland in 1956 as a private citizen. Free to enter politics, he formed the Bechuanaland Democratic Party, won the elections and led the way to independence, becoming his country’s first President. He remained in the post until his death, aged only 59, in 1980. He created a multiracial democratic society and is considered as one of the great successes of this era of African politics.

It’s good to be FRIDAY

St. Vitus’ Day (Serbian: Vidovdan) is celebrated on June 28th. It marks a 14th-century battle that has become an important part of Serb ethnic and national identity. Vidovdan is celebrated as a slava (feast day) in Serbia, though it is a working day.

The Serbian Orthodox Church designates it as a memorial day to Saint Prince Lazar and the Serbian holy martyrs who fell during the Battle of Kosovo against the Ottoman Empire in 1389. The Battle of Kosovo took place on St. Vitus’ Day (June 15th in the Julian calendar) 1389 between an army led by the Serbian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović and an invading army of the Ottoman Empire.

While the Ottomans suffered huge losses, they eliminated all of Prince Lazar’s forces. This led to Ottoman control in the region which lasted for several centuries.

It just feels so…TUESDAY

Today is Statehood Day in Slovenia. Known as ‘Dan državnosti’, this holiday is Slovenia’s national day and commemorates Slovenia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on June 25th 1991.

Historically part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire until its collapse at the end of World War I, Slovenia was one of the six republics that formed Yugoslavia. In December 1990, the Slovenian independence referendum had resulted in a 94.8% vote in favor of establishing an independent Slovenia.

The formal declaration of independence was on June 26th 1991, but since much of the legislation relating to independence was passed on June 25th, it is this date that is remembered and celebrated on Statehood Day.

The proclamation started the Ten-Day war with Yugoslavia. Yugoslav army tanks headed from barracks in Slovenia and Croatia to Slovenia’s borders with Italy, Austria and Hungary, triggering a ten-day war of independence.

Following a ceasefire based on the July 7th 1991 Brijuni Declaration, brokered by the EU’s predecessor, and a subsequent three-month independence process moratorium, the last Yugoslav troops left Slovenia in October 1991.

Croatia also celebrates Statehood day on the same day, as it was also a state created from the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

THURSDAY is a nice day

Today is the Feast of St. Anthony, a holiday in his hometown of Lisbon. It commemorates his death in 1231.

St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal to a wealthy family; his father was a captain in the Royal army. He was ordained as a priest and became inspired after meeting five Franciscan friars who were on their way to Muslim Morocco to preach the Gospel. A few months later he discovered that the monks were martyred and he joined the Franciscan order to follow in their path, adopting the name of Anthony, after Anthony the Great, who was one of the first monks and noted for his travels in desert lands.

Anthony’s life was changed when he was almost accidentally forced into giving a sermon. This uncovered his great gift for making speeches which led to Saint Francis asking him to travel around Italy preaching the Gospel which he did. He converted many people and became famed for his sermons.

In his hometown of Lisbon, festivities in his honor start on the evening of June 12th with a display of walking groups of singers and musicians, who parade along the Avenida da Liberdade. The celebration continues the next day with more processions and traditional dancing.
