Today is ‘Heroes Day’ in Guinea Bissau and Cabo Verde. It commemorates those who fought for independence and is set on the anniversary of the death of Amilcar Cabral. Cabral was a leader of independence movements in West Africa. He established The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde in 1956 and, in 1963, disillusioned by Portugal’s use of force to suppress demonstrations, the party launched a military campaign for independence. Cabral was shot on January 20, 1973 just a few months before Guinea Bissau gained independence.
