Hump Day, also known as WEDNESDAY.

Today is Culture and Literacy Day, a public holiday in Bulgaria. It is also known as ‘Bulgarian Education and Culture, and Slavonic Literature Day’ or ‘Alphabet Day’ and is Saints Methodius and Cyril Day and is celebrated following the Orthodox calendar on May 24th. Saints Cyril and Methodius were two Byzantine brothers born in Thessalonica in the 9th century. Part of a prominent Christian family, their father was Greek and their mother was Bulgarian.

They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet. At the request of the Moravian prince Rastislav, they began to transcribe religious books from Greek into Old Bulgarian.

Their alphabet is seen as the precursor to Cyrillic, which was named after Cyril. Today most of the Slavic countries, including Russia, still use an extension of that alphabet.

BADA BING!!

Friend at door…”Are you decent?” Me: “Not morally, but I’m wearing pants if that’s what you’re asking.”

Sometimes instead of cleaning the house, I watch an episode of Hoarders & then I think my house doesn’t look that bad.

Well, well, well… If it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.

I sent my picture to the Lonely Hearts Club. They sent it back. They said they weren’t that lonely.

All I’m saying is, at any point during that ride through the desert, he could have given that horse a name.

Someone stole the 5th month from my calendar…I’m really dismayed.

Being an introvert isn’t easy. Imagine waiting for a reply without sending a message.

The fastest land mammal is a toddler who’s been asked what’s in their mouth.

The difference between genius and stupidity is, genius has its limits.

last THURSDAY in April

Today is Resistance Day in Slovenia. It may also be known as ‘Day of uprising against Occupation’ and in Slovenian, it is known as ‘Dan upora proti okupatorju’. This holiday commemorates the establishment of the Slovenian Liberation Front in 1941.

During the second world war, Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia) was first partly annexed by Nazi Germany on April 6th 1941 and the remainder was annexed by Italy and Hungary on April 11th 1941.

The Liberation Front was established in the house of writer Josip Vidmar in Ljubljana in the evening of April 26th 1941. The front became the main resistance movement against the invaders, with its military wing, the Slovene Partisans, first fighting as a guerilla force, then becoming a more organized armed force. After the end of the war, the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Slovenia was formed on the basis of the Liberation Front.

Unfortunate juxtaposition…

Ugly MONDAY

Today is Memorial Easter in Moldova, a public holiday. It is observed on the eighth day after Orthodox Easter, which means it always falls on a Monday. Called ‘Paştele Blăjinilor’ in Romanian, this holiday is also known as the Easter of the Dead or Memorial Day and Parent’s Day. The origins of this festival are pagan rather than Christian with its roots based on an ancestor festival.

On Memorial Easter, families go to church and then on to the cemetery. There, the family graves are cleaned and a meal is eaten with some food intentionally let to fall on the ground as an offering to dead relatives.

In pagan times, families would have left eggs on the graves of the dead, symbolizing rebirth. When Christianity arrived in the region, rather than suppress the older traditions, the church simply absorbed the rituals into Christian festivals. The egg was an easy one as the date of spring for the ancestor worship festival fell close to Easter and the use of the egg as a symbol of rebirth fitted well with the Easter message of resurrection.

Today is the birthday, in 1942 of American singer, songwriter, actress, and filmmaker Barbra Streisand who had the 1974 US No.1 single ‘The Way We Were’, and the 1980 UK & US No.1 single ‘Woman In Love’. She is among a small group of entertainers who have been honored with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Films include, Funny Girl, The Owl and the Pussycat, The Way We Were, and A Star Is Born. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWoQW-b6Ph8

It’s MONDAY – favorite day of retirees

Today is Landing of the 33 Patriots Day, a public holiday in Uruguay. It commemorates the return of Juan Lavelleja and his 33 exiled Uruguayan fighters in 1825, who took an oath to free Uruguay from Brazilian control. In 1820, the region’s anticolonial hero, José Gervasio Artigas was forced into exile to Argentina, and by 1822, Banda Oriental (as Uruguay was then known) had become a province of Brazil following its independence from Portugal. in 1825, a group of Uruguayan fighters who had been exiled with Artigas returned under the leadership of Juan Antonio Lavalleja, a compatriot of José Gervasio Artigas. They crossed the Plata river landing on Agraciada Beach on the eastern side on April 19th. There they planted a flag of blue, white and red horizontal bars, colors associated with the Banda Oriental and took an oath to fight for independence for Uruguay. In August 1825, Uruguay declared its independence from Brazil, instigating the Argentina- Brazil War. The conflict lasted until August 1828, when a British negotiated a resolution to the war that led to Brazil recognizing Uruguay’s independence.

On this day in 1982, Vangelis was at No.1 on the US album chart with Chariots Of Fire, he later also won an Oscar for the album for best original score. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a-HfNE3EIo
