Hmm…looks like it might be TUESDAY

Today is Independence Day in the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic Independence Day is celebrated every year on February 27. The first celebration was observed in 1844 and it has been almost two centuries since. The Dominican Republic was under Haitian rule for 22 years before the independence war finally set them free. After they gained autonomy, the island of Hispaniola was divided into Haiti and Dominican Republic. Today, the Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean.

THUUUURRRSSSDAY

Today is the Day of King Amador, a public holiday in Sao Tome and Principe. The day commemorates Amador Viera—a man who is seen as a king and who helped to mobilize Africans to escape the bonds of slavery and to create their own free kingdom. He led a slave rebellion in 1595 against the Portuguese and declared himself to be the king of Sao Tome and Principe.

During 1595 and 1596, the Angolars ruled the island of Sao Tome under Amador Vieira’s command. On January 4, 1596, the Portuguese would end up capturing him and sending him to prison where the Portuguese executed him. And that’s why this holiday is observed every January 4th.

It’s currently unknown how the Angolars came to inhabit the island of Sao Tome, but there are several origin stories about it. One of the most told stories is that the Angolars were African slaves that were brought from the mainland and survived a shipwreck about 3-miles off the southern coast of Sao Tome Island.

Regardless of how the Angolars ended up in Sao Tome and Principe, it’s clear that Amador Viera—also known as Rei Amador—lead a slave rebellion in 1595 against the Portuguese and declared himself to be the king of the Angolars.

Small group…

Ed note: Augustus de Moran actually had some really great quotes, including my favorite: “I did not hear what you said, but I absolutely disagree with you.”

WED-NES-DAY, The day of syllables

Today is the National Day of the Victorious Greater Poland Uprising. It commemorates the 1918-19 Greater Poland Uprising.

The uprising took place in the wake of World War One, as Poland sought to re-establish itself as an independent state following over a century of partition between Germany, Russia and Austria.

The Greater Poland Uprising, which was one of the two successful Polish uprisings, ended in the triumph of Polish insurgents over the Germans. The uprising broke out on December 27, 1918, in Poznań (western Poland) after a patriotic speech by Ignacy Paderewski, the famous pianist and diplomat, who became the Polish prime minister in 1919. The city was liberated on January 6, 1919. Almost the entire province was liberated by mid-January.

Under the Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919, almost the entire Wielkopolskie province returned to Poland.

The TUESDAY of recovery…

Today is Independence and Unity Day in Slovenia. In Slovenian, it is known as ‘Dan samostojnosti in enotnosti’. This holiday commemorates the official proclamation of results of the Slovenian independence referendum (known as the ‘independence plebiscite’) on December 26th 1990. An overwhelming 94.8% of voters (88% turnout) favored the establishment of an independent and sovereign nation.

Slovenia was one of the six republics that formed Yugoslavia from 1944 until 1990. Until 2005, the holiday was simply called Independence Day (dan samostojnosti). ‘Unity’ was added in 2005 to emphasize the national consensus at the time of the 1990 referendum – DEMOS, a coalition of several parties won the first free multi-party elections in Slovenia in 1990, hastening the act of independence.

This took some planning…

M is for wet MONDAY

Today is Qatari National Day. Qatar National Day (Al-Yaoum-al-Watani) commemorates the day in 1878 when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father, Sheikh Muhammad Bin Thani, as the ruler of Qatar.

Qatar had started to develop into an important settlement in the eighteenth century. Following periods of control from various local regions, including agreements with the British, the Ottoman Empire arrived in 1871 at the request of the Emir.

On December 18th 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, as ruler of Qatar, becoming its first Emir in a lineage that continues to this day.

Ruling Qatar until his death in 1913, Sultan Jassim is revered in Qatar as ‘The Founder’ as under his rule he unified the tribes of the peninsula marking the creation of the modern state of Qatar. His leadership, both political and militarily, defined Qatar’s status a nation in the view of the two key powers in the region at that time – the Ottomans and the British.

In 1916 Qatar became a British protectorate. Qatar gained independence from the United Kingdom and became an independent sovereign state on September 3rd 1971. September 3rd was originally celebrated as Qatar’s National Day.

The ducks want an explanation.

“The quote is “I’m sexy and I know it”

sqrt(1+tan^2) can be verbalized as “sec” and so this formula is the “sec of c”

“I’m sec C and I know it””
