Today is the investiture of the new Captains Regent in San Marino, a public holiday. But more importantly, it is the OPENING OF THE CRAB SEASON IN MARYLAND!!!
I’m the sexiest!!!
Today is the birthday, in 1948, of Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican ska and reggae musician, multi-instrumentalist and singer who helped popularize reggae around the world.
The ‘Proms’ began in 1895 with the BBC supporting and broadcasting them from 1927. The ‘Last Night of the Proms’ is a rather boisterous and patriotic event attracting tens of thousands both inside and outside the hall and with plenty of flag waving and patriotic music. Among the music is ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ which is set to the ‘trio’ theme of Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. So here, in all it’s delightful craziness and fun is the performance from 2012. Sit back and enjoy!!
I was traveling on St. Patrick’s Day and didn’t get a chance to post. So, belatedly, here is some good music for that day. Have a few drinks this evening, imagine you’re in a pub and sing along with these!
I’m sure many of you remember when Ukrainian singer Jamala won the Eurovision song contest with ‘1944’. The song concerns the deportation of the Crimean Tatars (including Jamala’s great-grandmother) by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin to central Siberia. The song was released amid renewed repression of the Tatars with the Russian annexation of Crimea. The songs chorus is in the Crimean language based on a folk song she heard from her great-grandmother. With the current events, the song has gained new poignancy and a renewed following. Here are the lyrics and her performance.
When strangers are coming They come to your house They kill you all and say We’re not guilty not guilty Where is your mind? Humanity cries You think you are gods But everyone dies Don’t swallow my soul Our souls
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım Men bu yerde yaşalmadım Yaşlığıma toyalmadım Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
We could build a future Where people are free to live and love The happiest time
Where is your heart?
Humanity rise You think you are gods But everyone dies Don’t swallow my soul Our souls
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım Men bu yerde yaşalmadım Yaşlığıma toyalmadım Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
