Today is Pohnpei Constitution Day, a public holiday in Pohnpei State of the Federated States of Micronesia. It celebrates the establishment of the constitution of the State of Pohnpei in 1986 after Micronesia emerged from trusteeship to attain independence under a compact of free association with the United States.
The Federated States of Micronesia encompass some 607 islands with a total land area of about 271 square miles. While the land area is quite small, the country’s waters cover some 1.2 million square miles of the central Pacific Ocean.
