Today is the birthday (in 1940) of Percy Sledge. He was born in Leighton, Alabama and worked a series of agricultural jobs before taking a job as a hospital orderly and singing on weekends. A former patient introduced him to a record producer who auditioned him and offered him a contract. This is the first song he produced under the contract – a number 1 hit and a gold record for him.

Today is the birthday (in 1939 in Greenwood, Mississippi) of Betty Everett. She is best known for her 1964 hit ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’. On this day in 1957, The Silhouettes released their hit single: “Get a Job”. The song reached number 1 on both the pop and R&B charts and was later featured on the soundtracks of ‘American Graffiti’, ‘Stand by Me’ and others.
