Handel

Last THURSDAY in February!

Today is Brunei National Day. Brunei National Day (‘Hari Nasional’ in Malay) is always celebrated on February 23rd. This holiday marks full independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. The official name of the country is Sultanate of Brunei, Abode of Peace or ‘Negara Brunei Darussalam’ in Malay. Even though Brunei became independent on January 1st 1984, British control over formally ended on February 23rd 1984, so it is this date that now commemorates Brunei’s independence.

Today is the birthday, in 1685, of George Frideric Handel. Handel’s music forms one of the peaks of the “high baroque” style, bringing Italian opera to its highest development, creating the genres of English oratorio and organ concerto, and introducing a new style into English church music. He is consistently recognized as one of the greatest composers of his age. Sit back and listen to this amazing performance of ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, arranged for recorders.

THURSDAY

Today is Dragobete. A traditional Romanian observance, Dragobete is celebrated on 24 February each year, 10 days after Valentine’s Day, and is a day dedicated to love and nature. Legend has it that Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia, the goddess who ushered in spring, and because of his unending kindness, he was blessed by the Virgin Mary, to be the guardian of love.

I missed yesterday’s birthday, in 1685, of George Frideric Handel. Here is a nice piece he composed that might take your mind off the news for a while. Listen and enjoy.

Tuesday today

feeling a little slow?

a little slow…

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who askedwhat hours the call center was open.I told him, “The number you dialed is open24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”He responded, “Is that Eastern or Pacific time?”Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, “Uh, Pacific.”

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her cardesigned to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

I couldn’t find my luggage at the airport baggage area,so I went to the lost luggage office andtold the woman there that my bags never showed up.She smiled and told me not to worry becauseshe was a trained professional, and I was in good hands.”Now,” she asked me, “has your plane arrived yet?”So I replied, “No Ma’am, The Pilot told us we’re circling the airport, 3rd in line to land” …..

One day I was walking down the beach with some friends, when one of them shouted, “Look at that dead bird!”Someone looked up at the sky and asked, “Where?”

There were Vikings!

I know that a lot of you are into baking these days. If you have a few minutes, watch this guy and see how it’s done properly.

Today is the birthday of George Frideric Handel (in 1685). Here is one of his works that I like.
