2 2 2SDAY

Today is Navy Day in Chile. In Chile, it is known as The Day of the Glories of the Chilean Navy (‘Día de las Glorias Navales’) and marks the date of the battle of Iquique on May 21st 1879.

The battle took place during the War of the Pacific between Chile and Peru. The town of Iquique in the north of Chile was under Peruvian control. Chile had blockaded the port with two ships. In response, Peru sent two ships to break the blockade.

The Peruvian ships were more modern and the battle soon ended with defeat for the Chilean navy. At first glance, this may not seem to be a great basis for a holiday celebrating the glories of the navy, but during the battle, great courage was shown by the captain of one of the Chilean ships, Arturo Prat.

Prat’s bravery inspired many Chileans and following his death, there was a large rise in the number of men enlisting in the navy. The legacy of Prat’s heroism can be said to have led to the eventual victory of Chile in the War of the Pacific.

Bada Bing!!!!!

There is no such thing as a grouchy old person. The truth is, once you get old, you stop being polite and start being honest.

Happy MONDAY!

Today is Cypriot National Day, a public holiday in Cyprus. This holiday commemorates the start of the insurgence against the British in 1955.

Following the Russo-Turkish war (1877 – 1878), Cyprus was leased to the British Empire and was formally annexed by Britain at the end of the First World War.

Among the Greek Cypriots, the concept of ‘enosis’ – union with Greece had been a movement that had taken hold during the previous century, under the Ottoman rule. On April 1st 1955, the EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston) whose aim was unification with Greece through armed struggle, started their guerilla campaign, targeting British military installations on the island.

The campaign against the British lasted for the next four years. On August 16th 1960, a cease-fire was reached and Cyprus attained independence after the Zurich and London Agreement between the United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey.

and again it’s FRIDAY – two days in a row!!!

Today is Hawaiian Statehood Day. Also known as Admission Day, it commemorates the admission of the state to the Union in 1959.

From as early as 1849, there had been several attempts to make Hawaii a part of the United States.

Hawaii was annexed by the American in 1898, becoming the Territory of Hawaii.

In the 1940s, ballots during elections showed an increasing majority in favor of statehood and in 1959, the U.S. Congress approved a statehood bill, the Hawaii Admission Act. This was followed by a referendum in which Hawaiian residents voted 94% in support of statehood.

On August 21st 1959 (which was the third Friday in August in that year), President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state.
