Did you say FRIDAY??!?

Today is Independence Day in Liberia. This is the National Day of Liberia and commemorates Liberia’s Independence from the USA and adoption of the constitution on July 26th 1847.

The Republic of Liberia began as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS), who believed black people would face better chances for freedom in Africa than in the United States.

Between 1822 and 1861, thousands of free blacks were relocated to the settlement at Cape Mesurado on the Pepper Coast of West Africa. In 1824 the colony was named Liberia, and the main settlement was named Monrovia, which remains the present-day capital.

The settlers faced immense hardships in the initial years with atrocious mortality rates due to disease and conflict with the indigenous peoples. Within twenty years, the colony had grown and established economic stability.

On July 26th 1847, the settlers issued a Declaration of Independence and promulgated a constitution. The constitution was heavily based on the United States Constitution and established the independent Republic of Liberia. The United Kingdom was the first country to recognize Liberia’s independence, the United States only recognized Liberia’s independence in 1862 during the American Civil War.

Liberia was the first African republic to proclaim its independence, and is Africa’s first and oldest modern republic, maintaining independence despite the colonial expansion in Africa in the late nineteenth century.

WEDNESDAY…meh

Today is Independence Day in the Maldives. This holiday celebrates the day in 1965 when the Maldives gained independence from Britain.

On December 16th 1887, the Maldives became a protectorate of the British Empire. The Sultan of the Maldives agreed to give up the islands’ sovereignty in matters of foreign policy. In return, the British would provide military protection and not interfere in the internal affairs of the islands, though they still needed to be consulted on key changes such as the appointment of a new Sultan. On July 26th 1965, an agreement was signed by the Maldives’ Prime Minister and the British Ambassador which ended the British responsibility for the defense and external affairs of the Maldives.

The Maldives is the lowest country in the world. Its ground level on average is 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches) above sea level, and its highest point on the islands is 2.3 meters (7 feet 7 inches) above sea level. It is also the smallest country in Asia.

Due Today

So….

The owner of a seafood restaurant sends one of his sons undercover to his rival's restaurant.

The dad tells him to get a job as a cook and figure out the recipe for his rival's famous clam chowder.

The first day, the son comes home with a basic list of ingredients that the rival uses. They try making it, but it doesn't turn out the same. The dad sends him back.

The second day, the son comes home having watched the rival chef prepare the chowder. They try again to make it, and it's close, but the consistency is off.

"It's too watery!" said the dad. "It needs to be thicker!"

They try to figure out what they're doing wrong, and the son realizes that he was distracted for a minute while the chef did something.

"He must have added a secret ingredient, one not on the list, while you looked away!" concludes the dad.

He sends his son back for a third day, this time telling him not to take his eyes off the chef for a second. The son comes back the next day excited.

"You'll never believe what I saw!" he says. "He did have a secret ingredient, it's a piece of paper!"

"A piece of paper?"

"Yeah, he keeps a stack of printed paper in the kitchen. It's a bunch of Wikipedia articles he's printed out, of various movies. When he makes the chowder, he tears out the synopsis of a movie from one of the articles and puts it in. It's the strangest thing, but that's the secret ingredient."

"Ah," says the dad, "the plot thickens."

Today is the birthday, in 1943, of Mick Jagger.
