Today is Mother Tongue Day in Estonia. It celebrates and encourages the Estonian language. March 14 is the anniversary of the birthday of Kristjan Jaak Peterson in 1801, an Estonian poet who is widely regarded as a herald of Estonian national literature and modern Estonial poetry. He died at age 21 of tuberculosis.

Saturday was Independence Day in Bangladesh, celebrating the events of March 26, 1971 when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, which were known at the time as East Pakistan and West Pakistan, respectively.
