WEDWEDNESNESDAY

Today is St. Wenceslas Day in the Czech Republic. Also known as ‘Czech Statehood Day’, it is a national holiday in the Czech Republic and has been a public holiday since 2000. It is the feast day of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, and commemorates his death in 935.

On this day in 1976, Stevie Wonder released his eighteenth studio album Songs in the Key of Life, an ambitious double LP with a four-song bonus EP. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Chart on October 8, 1976, becoming only the third album in history to achieve that feat and the first by an American artist. It had this song.

Today is Qaumee Dhuvas (meaning ‘National Day’ in Dhivehi, the local language) in the Maldives, a public holiday. Maldives national day celebrates the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam over the Portuguese occupation in 1573.

Today is Autumnal Equinox Day, a national holiday in Japan. Autumnal Equinox Day (Shūbun-no-hi) was established as a national holiday in 1948. Before then, the autumnal equinox was an imperial ancestor worship festival called ‘Shūki kōrei-sai’ and the holiday had its roots in Shinto traditions as a time to give thanks to the deities for a successful harvest.

Today is Independence Day in Mali. It commemorates the independence of the Republic of Mali from the Mali Federation on 22 September 1960.

Lots of birthdays today but I have to feature Joan Jett who was born on this day in 1958. She was the front for the Runaways and Later the Blackhearts. She is known as the godmother of punk. In 1981, this song (which I love) was number one for eight consecutive weeks.
