It is a holiday that commemorates the beginning of Panama’s struggle to break free from Spanish rule when a young woman in Villa de Los Santos realized most of the Spanish soldiers had departed to fight in Ecuador and she shouted “Viva la Libertad” and the citizens seized the Spanish barracks igniting the fight for independence.
