Ghana celebrates its independence day today. Knows as the ‘Gold Coast’ during the colonial period, Ghana was the first sub-Saharan colony to achieve its independence on March 6, 1957.

Today is the birthday, in 1946, of Matthew Fisher, keyboardist of the band Procol Harum who had this hit – one of the few singles to sell more than 10 million copies. The band, incidentally, was named after a cat.
