Today is Day of the Sea in Bolivia – a landlocked country. It commemorates the lost of its coastal province in the War of the Pacific. On March 23, 1879, Chilean forces attacked and defeated some 100 Bolivian and Peruvian soldiers at the Battle of Calama. The Bolivian commander, Eduardo Abaroa was defending a small bridge when the Chileans demanded his surrender. His response was “Que se rinda tu abuela!” which means, “Me, surrender? Tell your grandmother to surrender!” after which he was promptly shot dead.
Here’s a bit of CCR!
