Today is Abolition Day, a public holiday in French Guiana. It marks the abolition of slavery in the colony in 1848. While slavery was abolished in France and all its overseas possessions on April 27, the news didn’t reach French Guiana until June 10. Hence the event is observed in French Guiana every year on June 10.
Today is the birthday, in 1941, of Shirley Owens, one of the Shirelles.
