Thoughts from the depths of the Eastern Shore

FRIDAY is nice

Today is Los Santos Uprising Day, a public holiday in the Republic of Panama. The official full name of the holiday is the “First Call for Independence of the Villa de los Santos” (Primer Grito de Independencia de la Villa de los Santos), though it is also known as “Uprising of Los Santos” or “First Call for Independence” (Primer Grito de Independencia ).

The region of modern-day Panama was an early stopping point for Spanish explorers as they made their first excursions towards South America.

In 1519, Panama City became the first European settlement on the shores of the Pacific and the isthmus became an important part of the Spanish Empire.

Panama’s struggle for independence started in Los Santos an area on the eastern part of the Azuero Peninsula. On November 10, 1821, in an event called Grito de La Villa de Los Santos, the residents of the Azuero declared their separation from the Spanish Empire. The story goes that a young woman led a crowd to the barracks, chanting “long live liberty!”

The uprising galvanized support and inspired enough momentum to bring independence to Panama and the Independence Act of Panama was officially declared on November 28th 1821.

Panama joined Venezuela, New Granada (present-day Colombia) in the Republic of Colombia, also known as Gran Colombia.

THURSDAY – according to my phone

Today is Independence Day in Cambodia. The holiday celebrates the anniversary of Cambodia’s independence from France on 9 November 1953 and is Cambodia’s national holiday.

Cambodia became a protectorate of France in 1863 and a virtual colony by the twentieth century. In 1941, the French installed Prince Sihanouk on the Cambodian throne. With the support of the Japanese, Sihanouk declared independence from France in March 1945. Following the defeat of Japan, France regained control of the region, but the move had sparked a desire for independence. By July 1953, France had stated that it was ready to grant full independence to Cambodia and on 9 November 1953, full independence was achieved.

King Norodom Sihanouk went on to rule Cambodia for the next 15 years before he was overthrown by a military coup.

Not precisely what he wanted…

2s-DAY

Today is October Revolution Day, a public holiday in Belarus. The holiday marks the Great October Socialist Revolution that began on this day in 1917.

The October Revolution was the second revolution that took place in Russia in 1917. In February 1917, revolutionaries in St. Petersburg, overthrew the Tsar resulting in his abdication and the end of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian Empire. Russian was put under the control of a provisional government under Prince Georgy Lvov. After the February Revolution, ‘Soviets’ were created across Russia. The Soviets were worker’s councils, popular due to disaffection with the ability of the provisional government to improve the conditions of workers.

Many leaders of the Soviets were Bolsheviks. Under the leadership of Lenin, they initiated the October Revolution, an armed insurrection in Petrograd on November 7th 1917. This revolution established the Russian Socialist Soviet Republic, the world’s first self-proclaimed socialist state.

Sunbathing…

Bada BING!

Q: When was running invented? A: Running was invented in 1748 by Thomas Running when he tried to walk twice at the same time.

I wonder what Mar-A-Lago is going to sell for at the sheriffs’ auction.

I’m not arguing, I’m explaining why I’m correct.

I always carry a small stone to throw at people who sing Christmas songs in October. I call it my Jingle Bell Rock.

Bumper stickers:

I was an honor student. I don’t know what happened.

The fact that no one understands you does not mean you’re an artist.

Watch out for the moron behind me.

Condoms prevent minivans

If money is the root of all evil, If money is the root of all evil

Pass quietly driver asleep

If Big Bird was a rapper he’d go by Lil Bird.

FACT: Snow in October and November happens because people decorate for Christmas prematurely. You know who you are. STOP IT!

What day starts with ‘M’…MONDAY!

Today is Constitution Day in the Dominican Republic. This holiday marks the adoption of the country’s first Constitution on this day in 1844.

1844 was a momentous year for this Caribbean country, which was commonly known as Santo Domingo until the 20th century. In February, the nation had proclaimed its independence from Haiti.

The first Constitution followed on November 6th of that year. It was signed in San Cristóbal, a town near the capital,  Santo Domingo. It was modeled on the United States constitution and featured a presidential form of government with many liberal tendencies.

Since then the Dominican Republic has gone through 39 constitutions, more than any other country. This statistic is a somewhat deceiving indicator of political stability, however, because of the Dominican practice of promulgating a new constitution whenever an amendment is ratified. Although technically different from each other in some particular provisions, most new constitutions contained only minor modifications of those previously in effect.
