Thoughts from the depths of the Eastern Shore

Jamala

I’m sure many of you remember when Ukrainian singer Jamala won the Eurovision song contest with ‘1944’. The song concerns the deportation of the Crimean Tatars (including Jamala’s great-grandmother) by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin to central Siberia. The song was released amid renewed repression of the Tatars with the Russian annexation of Crimea. The songs chorus is in the Crimean language based on a folk song she heard from her great-grandmother. With the current events, the song has gained new poignancy and a renewed following. Here are the lyrics and her performance.

When strangers are coming
They come to your house
They kill you all
and say
We’re not guilty
not guilty Where is your mind?
Humanity cries
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım

We could build a future
Where people are free
to live and love
The happiest time

Where is your heart?

Humanity rise
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım

FRIDAY is here!

Today is Restoration of Independence Day, a public holiday in Lithuania. This holiday marks the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on this day in 1990. The Lithuanian people voted for self-rule in elections held in February 1990, and the new democratically elected parliament declared independence from the Soviet Union on March 11th 1990. The Soviet Union reacted negatively to the act of independence and began an economic blockade against Lithuania and eventually resorted to violence against people holding vigil around the capital buildings in Vilnius on January 13th 1991. Outrage from around the world stopped the attack and Lithuania’s independence was recognized by the Soviets later that year.

THURSAY strikes again!

Today is Moshoeshoe Day in Lesotho, a country I have fond memories of. Moshoeshoe was the first King of Lesotho. He founded Basutoland to unite the local tribes to successfully fight against the Zulus and later the Boers. While Basutoland eventually became a British colony, Moshoeshoe was successful in keeping it from becoming a part of South Africa and it eventually became the independent country of Lesotho.

TUESDAY…that’s today!

Today most countries celebrate International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day was first established at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. German women’s rights activist and Marxist theorist Clara Zetkin was the one who tabled the idea.

My fondest childhood memory is not having to spend 40 hours a week with people who make me feel angry and tired so that I can afford to buy paper towels and laundry detergent.

Just a warning if you’re buying a watch on Amazon. I learned the hard way that if it says you can swim with it, it only applies if you can already swim without it.

I don’t usually brag about going to expensive places, but I just left the gas station.

My mother-in-law came over to eat supper with us. Halfway through the meal, she asked why our cat kept staring at her. I said it’s because you’re using the cat’s bowl.

If you replace the W in When, Where, and What, with a T, you get the answer to each question.

Today is the birthday, in 1945, of George Michael Dolenz. He was cast in the TV sitcom, The Monkees and became the drummer and lead vocalist. He was not actually a drummer and had to take lessons to learn how to mime credibly but eventually was taught how to play properly. By the time the Monkees went on tour he was able to play the drums himself. He provided the lead vocals for a number of their songs including this one.
