FRIDAY…finally

Today is Women’s Day in Mozambique. Also known as the National Day of Women, this day marks the anniversary of Josina Muthemba Machel’s death on April 7th 1971. Josina was a key figure in the struggle for the emancipation of African women.

When she was 19, Josina joined the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO). Josina received military training and rose through the ranks of FRELIMO to become the head of the party’s Department of Social Affairs in 1969, while still only 24. Josina was a strong advocate of the participation of women in the liberation struggle, and she was an icon for the Women’s Movement of Mozambique.

In 1969, she married Samora Machel, who would go on to become the first President of Mozambique in 1975. She died on April 7th 1971, at the age of 25 from liver cancer

Today is Tomb Sweeping Day in Taiwan and other countries. Officially known as Qingming Jie, this festival is a traditional Chinese celebration set aside to honor departed family members. Also known as Ching Ming Festival or Tomb-Sweeping Day, Taiwanese families remember their ancestors by cleaning and offering sacrifices that may benefit the deceased. Qingming Jie is celebrated annually on April 5 in Taiwan.

Today is the birthday, in 1942, of Alan Clarke, singer with British pop/rock group The Hollies who have scored over 30 top 40 hits, including ‘Just One Look’, ‘Bus Stop’, ‘Carrie Anne’, and later ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ and ‘The Air That I Breathe’. TUESDAY is almost springlike here

Today is Peace Day, a public holiday in Angola. Día da Paz, the Day of Peace and Reconciliation commemorates the end of the Angolan Civil War on this day in 2002.

Independence from Portugal came to Angola in 1975. Two guerrilla groups had been instrumental in the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonization – the communist People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). Almost immediately after independence, a power struggle between the two groups led to the Angolan Civil War. The MPLA seized power in the capital Luanda. With only a few interludes in the fighting, the war was to last 27 years. The conflict is estimated to have cost the lives of more than 500,000 civilians with over a million being displaced.

First MONDAY in April!

Today is Second Republic Day, a public holiday in Guinea. This public holiday commemorates the 1984 bloodless coup that established the so-called Second Republic.

Following the collapse of the French Fourth Republic, Guinea proclaimed its independence in 1958. The country was ruled by Ahmed Sékou Touré, the leader of the Democratic Party of Guinea (PDG). Touré’s regime was authoritarian: PDG was the only legal party in Guinea, and Touré was reelected unopposed to four consecutive presidential terms.

On March 26, 1984, Touré died after a heart surgery. Colonels Lansana Conté and Diarra Traoré seized the opportunity and staged a coup that took place on April 3, 1984. Conté became the new president, while Traoré assumed the role of prime minister.

Today is the birthday, in 1943 of Richard Manuel, Canadian composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, best known as a pianist, lead singer, and occasional drummer of the Band. He joined Ronnie Hawkins’s backing group, the Hawks when he was 18. The Band had the 1969 US No.25 single ‘Up On Cripple Creek’, and the 1970 UK No.16 single ‘Rag Mama Rag’.
