Today most countries celebrate International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day was first established at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. German women’s rights activist and Marxist theorist Clara Zetkin was the one who tabled the idea.

Today is the birthday, in 1945, of George Michael Dolenz. He was cast in the TV sitcom, The Monkees and became the drummer and lead vocalist. He was not actually a drummer and had to take lessons to learn how to mime credibly but eventually was taught how to play properly. By the time the Monkees went on tour he was able to play the drums himself. He provided the lead vocals for a number of their songs including this one.

Today is the birthday, in 1946, of Matthew Fisher, keyboardist of the band Procol Harum who had this hit – one of the few singles to sell more than 10 million copies. The band, incidentally, was named after a cat.

FRIDAY already!!!

I’m sure you are all thrilled to know that today is the anniversary of the coronation of the Sultan of Terengganu and a public holiday in that Malaysian state. The current Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin is the 17th sultan, in a lineage that dates back to 1925.

I’m sure you’ll get a laugh from this.

Today is the birthday, in 1953, of Emilio Estefan. Born in Santiago Cuba, he is a renowned music producer and musician and is the husband of singer Gloria Estefan. In addition to his work with the Miami Sound Machine he produced albums and wrote music for Shakira, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and many others. He has won 19 Grammy awards. He was a founding member of Miami Sound Machine and this song of theirs will get your ready for the weekend!!!

Today is Liberation Day, a public holiday in Bulgaria. This holiday is Bulgaria’s national day and honors the Bulgarian volunteers who, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 with the assistance of Romanian forces, liberated Bulgaria from almost 500 years of Ottoman rule.

WEDNESDAY – the longest day of the week

Today is James Ronald Webster Day in Anguilla. Known as the Father of the Nation, James Ronald Webster, was born on March 2nd 1926. In 2010, Webster was awarded a public holiday on his birthday for his role in leading Anguilla’s separation from the Federation of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla.
